Thousands Protest in Austria Against Far-Right Extremist’s Call to Expel Migrants

Nearly 300 people participated in a demonstration against right-wing extremist Martin Sellner after he announced his intention to read excerpts from his controversial book, “Remigration.” According to the Austrian police, about 3,000 people gathered in Marburg to protest the scheduled reading by this Austrian right-wing extremist.

Some 2,500 people participated in a rally organized by the Democracy Network against right-wing extremism and the city of Marburg. However, according to a city spokeswoman, the actual number of participants was 3,000. In addition, police reported that around 1,000 people organized a second demonstration in the city’s market square, while a third planned demonstration was canceled. Approximately 150 individuals blocked roads and ignited smoke pots, leading to the removal of several protesters by emergency services.

According to information from the city of Marburg, right-wing extremist Sellner had planned to read from his book “Remigration” in a private location at an undisclosed time. However, the police announced late that the reading had already happened in Gladenbach, a town 20 kilometers away from Marburg. According to the police, approximately 50 people attended the reading.

Marburg Mayor Thomas Spies vehemently condemned what he termed “misanthropic ideologies.” The Social Democrats had earlier denounced Martin Sellner’s attempts to propagate “Marburg theories” targeting the expulsion of city residents. Spies deemed Sellner’s views a grave threat to society, democracy, and the constitution.

Martin Sellner, leader of Austria’s far-right Identitarian Movement, delivered a speech on immigration in November 2023 at a Bonsdam villa during a meeting labeled “corrective” by the media. Mayor Thomas Spies emphasized that the use of the term “corrective” by extremists signals a grave threat to society, democracy, and the constitution. He further asserted that when right-wing extremists employ the word “migration,” they are advocating for the forced expulsion of foreigners from Austria.
