The Polish opposition has accused the government of covertly assisting Germany in transferring thousands of migrants into Poland. Just days after a protest at the western border, key opposition leaders, including Jarosław Kaczyński, the head of the Law and Justice party, visited the southern border with Germany. They urged Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government to prevent Germany from returning migrants to Poland and to implement stricter border controls. The opposition contends that Germany’s current migration policy is adversely affecting Poland, asserting that thousands of migrants are being moved from Germany into Polish territory.
The leader of the Law and Justice Party, Jarosław Kaczyński, has criticized the migration policy implemented by the Polish government under Donald Tusk. Kaczyński specifically attacked Germany for allegedly disregarding Poland’s sovereignty, claiming that German soldiers were involved in transporting migrants into Poland. At a press conference held at the border, Kaczyński stated, “This marks a shift in our status as a sovereign nation. Germany, with its officials in power, acts as it pleases, entering our territory without regard.” He continued, “Not long ago, Poland was a sovereign state that safeguarded its borders, a country where foreign police officers could not enter without oversight, a country that upheld its responsibilities. But that all changed with the arrival of the Tusk government. Now, it is uncertain whether we will retain our sovereignty or lose it.”
Kaczyński claimed that German media had exposed Germany’s covert operation of transferring thousands of migrants to neighboring countries. He argued that these transfers violate international law, human rights agreements, and Poland’s sovereignty over its borders.
Kaczyński also criticized Germany’s migration policy, calling it “foolish.” He pointed to former Chancellor Angela Merkel as the one who initially invited the migrants, and argued that Germany’s current migration strategy harms Poland by pushing migrants into its territory.
In a related statement, Mariusz Błaszczak, head of the Law and Justice parliamentary group, urged the government to take action to restore the sense of security among residents of border towns. Writing on platform X, Błaszczak stated: “I urge the government not to fear the Germans. It must make a firm decision and put an end to the actions of German authorities. Poland must be safe.”
Tensions have risen along Poland’s western border in recent days following German newspaper reports claiming that CDU leader Friedrich Merz has been engaged in secret negotiations to form an international coalition with neighboring countries to block migrants at the German border. According to the reports, Germany is in talks with Poland, Switzerland, France, Austria, and the Czech Republic to expand deportation operations at the borders.
The Polish opposition contends that the government’s decision to suspend asylum applications at the Belarusian border is in line with Germany’s plans. However, Prime Minister Donald Tusk dismissed these allegations, asserting that the return of irregular migrants from Germany to Poland is conducted in accordance with the Dublin Regulation.
